Dear Live And Invest Overseas Reader,

What you know about Europe is a lie.

Well, at least if you’ve never lived here full-time before…

Visiting Europe or reading about it, you’ll swoon over the elaborate façades…

The priceless works of art in the middle of public streets…

And the breathtaking wealth in everything from the modern-day kings and queens in their castles to the Ferraris and Aston Martins parked outside the couture fashion shows.

Europe, for many outsiders, is a world apart from the gritty and grimy rat race in the rest of the world…

Europe is posh… the center of arts and culture… the bastion of wealth.

And yet… while some of that may be true…

The underlying message—that Europe is for the wealthy—is an outright lie.

Here’s the truth…

If you’re North American, you are statistically likely to be wealthier than the average European.

The average annual salary in the European Union—the richest nations in Europe—is only around the equivalent of $41,000…

That’s more than 1/3 less than the United States (around $65,000 a year) and 1/4 less than Canada’s average salary (about $55,000).

What’s more, Americans, in particular, invest more often…. estimates have the average American as up to 50% wealthier than their European counterpart.

Now, that’s not the whole story, obviously….

The deal here for Europeans is that they earn (much) less in exchange for better retirement benefits, a more robust safety net, nearly free healthcare, and far fewer working hours.

Furthermore, education (even universities) and public transportation are free or heavily subsidized. Even the costs of food and housing tend to end up being less than in North America due to taxes and regulations…

Of course, if you’re a retiree or digital nomad or someone who doesn’t plan to get a job here…

You won’t have to pay the social charges and income taxes that provide most of these things, meaning you can enjoy many of Europe’s benefits at a bargain compared to the people who grew up here and had to pay into the system their whole lives.

However, again, if you have only visited Europe, that all seems hard to believe…

Family and friends who have toured Europe are routinely blown away by some of the prices…

Hotel rooms for $300 a night…  $6 bottled waters… $80 lunches… tiny apartments for $1 million…

Take Italy, for example…

Everyone raves about Tuscany…

But with 45 million tourists showing up every year, the region has lost a lot of its charm… and hiked up its prices.

Today, I couldn’t recommend Tuscany to any retiree looking to live the good life in Europe.

If you’re after the traditional Italian lifestyle, you have much better options…

Top of my list is the place known as “the greenest region in Europe.”
Hidden Haven: Italy’s “other Tuscany” is just as pleasant… but at a fraction the cost…
Just two hours from Rome, it has everything you’ll find in Tuscany—but with fewer people and lower prices.

Tucked between the sea and the slopes, its lush countryside is dotted with national parks, palaces, and wineries…

And with an average monthly budget of $1,800 for a couple, you’d have no reason to put your retirement off any longer.

But maybe you have your heart set on a dreamy island escape…

If you’ve looked at a world-famous option like Santorini, you’ve probably seen that living costs can be as high as $3,500 a month.

Meanwhile, on one of our favorite Greek islands, you could slash that budget in half…
This “hidden haven” is perfect for those who enjoy history, mountains, and the sea…
In this place Condé Nast Traveler called “the It Girl of the Ionian islands,” expats live well on around $1,450 a month…

You still have the same great weather, warm water, and glamor of Santorini… not to mention far more beaches to choose from.

But maybe, for you, only a city will do.

Icons like Paris and Barcelona have a rep for being pricey…

But even in Paris, it’s possible to live affordably when you know where to go (more on how to do that a little later).

That said, you really owe it to yourself to look beyond Europe’s well-known hotspots.

I’m talking about places that have, for the most part, escaped globalization…

And where you’ll get much more bang for your buck…

For starters, there’s the Spanish city we at Live And Invest Overseas named the World’s Top Retirement Haven…
Safe, welcoming, and vibrant, with its own Mediterranean sandy beach, this city
was ranked as the World’s #1 Retirement Haven in 2024 and 2025…
This sophisticated city, on the shores of the Mediterranean, offers a true Old World experience with a modern twist.

And with a motto of “Live without sleep,” you won’t be short of entertainment any hour of the day.

Best of all, you’ll pay about 30% less here than in Barcelona—on everything from your groceries to renting an apartment in the historic quarter.

I’m barely scratching the surface here.

My point is, whatever lifestyle you’re after, you can find it in Europe… and at a price that’ll probably surprise you.

Again, it all comes down to knowing where to look.

When you only focus on popular tourist and expat haunts, you risk missing out while you try to set aside enough savings to move overseas…

But with a helpful nudge in the right direction (from me), you could be jetting off this very year…

Snowbird, Nomad, Or Full-Timer?
I’ll Help You Find Your Ideal Spot In Europe…

You have hundreds of choices in Europe… we’ll help you choose the
best place for you, as easily and as quickly as you’d like...
The truth is, once you start to uncover all the attractive lifestyles on offer across the Pond, you may have trouble choosing just one.

As an expat in Europe myself, I know just how easy it is to be tempted by the cheap airfares and train tickets to places all over the Continent.

That’s why so many Europhiles wind up hopping from place to place, spending a couple of weeks here… a month there…

Of course, you could do that, too…

But let’s not get ahead of ourselves…

Today, I’d like to help you figure out where to start your own grand adventure in Europe.

Whether you’re interested in trying out the Continent for a few months of the year—leaving home before the first bite of winter…

Or you’re ready to sell up and ship out of the United States on a one-way ticket…

I’m here to help you pinpoint the corner of Europe that’s a match for you… right down to the neighborhood or street you’ll call home.

And I want to start by sending you a free copy of a new report from our editorial team…

It’s called Secret Europe: 7 Lesser-Known Places To Supercharge Your Retirement On The Continent.

Spoiler alert: In most of these places, a couple could live comfortably on under $2,000 a month… and even less again if you own your property…
I’ll tell you how you can get your hands on a copy of this hot-off-the-presses report (at absolutely no charge) in a minute.

But first, let’s take a peek at a couple more of the underdogs that are luring a new wave of adventurers to European shores…

A Jet-Setter Lifestyle At A Fraction The Cost

If you want all the best of the Mediterranean lifestyle… without having to share it with hordes of tourists… “Europe’s Secret Riviera” may be the place for you…

From its pristine medieval villages to its towering mountains and deep, blue waters… you’ll feel like you’ve stepped inside the pages of a fairytale…
Hidden Haven: This Mediterranean country has a distinct Scandinavian feel—except the
weather here is sunny and warm almost all year round...
In 2023, Forbes named this the best place in the world for jet-setters…

True, that lifestyle is available for those who want—and can afford—it…

But beyond the superyachts and five-star hotels, ordinary folks are enjoying all the trappings of a top Mediterranean lifestyle at a fraction the cost…

Early retirees and nomadic YouTubers Warren and Julie Knox chose to make this place their base in Europe…

“It reminds us of Lake Como,” they told us. “But down here, you get a good mix of people—from the wealthy yacht owners to regular people living off their Social Security.

“You can enjoy a few drinks with friends for $10… and a good meal for two, with a glass of wine, is only $18 to $22.”

But there’s another big reason this place is emerging as an attractive option for Americans looking to spend extended time on this side of the Pond…

Buy A Property, Get A Residency Visa…

Yes, it’s true—a handful of European countries reward foreign property buyers with a residence card…

Of course, I wouldn’t recommend you choose your new home for this reason alone (you have other ways to make your stay legal)…

But when you have an attractive haven offering up such a perk, it’s worth checking your options…

Now, sometimes this kind of deal comes with a minimum investment amount.

Going this residency route in Greece, for example, you’ll have to buy something for at least €400,000 (and stretch to €800,000 in the most populated and sought-after places) …

But here in “Europe’s Secret Riviera,” the bar is way lower.

In fact, there’s no minimum. The only caveat is that what you’re buying must be a habitable property—a piece of raw land or a pile of rubble won’t work.

The good news is, while this country remains off the radar of the masses, you can still find plenty of bargains…

Right now, for example, there’s a one-bed apartment 500 meters from the sea, with mountain views, asking €79,000 ($84,200)…

And closer to the water, with a panoramic view of the bay, you’ll find a one-bed apartment for €119,200 ($126,840)…

Now this isn’t the only place where you can secure residency through an affordable property purchase…

If you want to have sunny days year round, and be able to speak English everywhere you go, then I urge you to skip straight to page 30 of your free report, Secret Europe: 7 Lesser-Known Places To Supercharge Your Retirement On The Continent

That’s where you’ll find the off-the-radar destination that’s one of our top picks in Europe at the moment…

This place reminds me a lot of Ibiza or Mallorca… without the throngs in summer… or the steep prices on both sales and rentals…
This sandy and sunny “hidden haven” is on the warmest island in the Mediterranean Sea…
Here in this former British colony, pre-construction apartments start from around $75,000…

And, for something truly special, with direct access to the area’s long, golden beaches, you can get in for around $115,000…

To put that in perspective, you’d be paying upward of €340,000 ($362,400) for a comparable foothold on Mallorca… without a bonus residency.

World-Class Cities Are Just A Short Hop Away…

If you’re craving the culture, sophistication, and out-of-this-world architecture that Europe is famous for…

And you want to be spoiled for choice when it comes to shopping, entertainment, and eating out…

Then you won’t want to stray too far from the big city…

I get it.

I’ve always been a city girl at heart.

I was only 8 years old when my family moved from Baltimore, Maryland to the small town of Waterford, Ireland.

It was a major shock to my system.

Especially when my parents decided to buy and renovate a Georgian manor house way out in the sticks…

It wasn’t until we moved to Paris—a whole seven years later—that I felt truly at home…

I’d made the best I could of my life in the Irish countryside.

But in the City of Light, I felt like the world was suddenly at my fingertips.
Getting lost in Paris is a delight—you’ll discover something interesting and new around every turn…
From then on, I lost hours of my weekend in museums…

Thursday evenings were for reserved for gallery openings…

And any weekend we could, my friends and I took trips based on the cheapest available flight… or who had access to a car…

We flew to Venice for the Biennale, drove to Amsterdam on a whim, and took trains to spend weeks of the summer in the south of France…

There were quieter moments too…

Some of my best memories to this day are lazy afternoons spent lounging in parks or on the quais of the Seine…

Sometimes with other expat kids… other times alone with a book…

But always with a fresh baguette and some Camembert…

I left Paris to go to college in the United States… and later spent seven years working in Panama City…

All that time, my plan was to get back to Europe one day… and especially back to Paris…

Finally, in 2018, my husband Harry and I packed our bags for Paris, where we’re living full time and raising our young family.

My love for Paris is just as strong today as it was all those years ago for teenage me.

Not a week goes by when I don’t discover something new about my adopted home…

The icing on the cake is the ever expanding list of plane and train connections to other attractive towns and cities in La Belle France and beyond…

This chance to hop cities is one of the biggest perks for North American expats in Europe.

And it’s that much easier to escape for a few days to London, Prague, or Rome when you’re an easy run from an airport…

Case in point… Jeff and Joch Woodruff moved from California to Portugal just before the pandemic…

That first year, they were pretty much grounded. But since then, they’ve taken full advantage of the fact that they live just 15 minutes from Porto’s international airport…

Over the past few years, they’ve traveled all around their newly adopted country… as well as hopping on budget flights to destinations in Spain, France, Italy, the UK, and Ireland.

“The best thing about going to all these great cities is that we don’t have to see everything on one trip,” Jeff told us. “We can walk around Naples or Barcelona at our leisure, knowing that we can easily come back any time.”

I’ll tell you about some of Live And Invest Overseas’ top city picks in your free copy of Secret Europe: 7 Lesser-Known Places To Supercharge Your Retirement On The Continent.

Inside, you’ll discover:

  • The historic city on the Med, world-famous for its stunning architecture, where the golden beaches of the “Orange Blossom Coast” are just a 30-minute metro ride away (pg. 17)…

  • Where you could easily get by on English long term. Few locals expect any foreigners to speak their language and are genuinely surprised if you know a few words (pg. 23)…

  • A UNESCO-protected old town where you’ll feel you’ve been transported back in time—especially when you check out the menu. A hearty breakfast costs under $10… a cappuccino is less than $2… and you can enjoy a pizza slice for $3 (pg. 12)…

  • The best coastal city in France you’ve never heard of. It’s laid back with a small-town feel… a great boating culture… and no shortage of shopping options (pg. 36)…

  • Our favorite city to enjoy an authentic Portuguese experience. With an attractive historic center, this lesser-known university city is more affordable than Lisbon and Porto… yet still oozes with charm (pg. 42)…

World-Class Health Care—For Less—
Makes Europe Worth Those Extra Miles…

If you’re an American, your monthly cost will plummet thanks to MUCH more
affordable health care—we’ll also show you where it’s virtually free…
While decent health care is available in Asia and Latin America, services aren’t as consistent as you’ll find in Europe…

Many expats we know south of the border, for example, opt to return home for medical attention.

All of which takes time… and costs even more money…

In Europe, you’d be spared the hassle.

Plus the level of care you’ll find here goes above and beyond what you’re used to…
arrow_drop_down_circle
Hotel or hospital?

Having given birth to two babies in France, I can tell you the care our family has gotten here is far beyond anything I’ve experienced in the United States—and the prices are a drop in the bucket by comparison.

Even my husband was well cared for during our maternity stays, with his own bed in our private room. Both of us were served full, four-course, gourmet meals (plus wine). We were even given a choice every day: steak, fish, chicken, or vegetarian.

And you’ll find medical costs, as well as health insurance, are a fraction of what they’ll set you back in the States today.

Even paying out of pocket for services overseas can still come in way cheaper than your co-pay costs back home.

And, if you’re fed up forking out for prescription drugs, here’s something else that should make your day…

Wherever you go in Europe, the cost of meds will likely be 50% to 80% lower than you’re used to...

What’s more, many common drugs you can only get on prescription Stateside are available over the counter (no questions asked)—saving you the added cost of a trip to the doctor’s office.

All this means you get to hold on to more of your hard-earned cash… so you’re free to embrace the good life in your new home.

Among the places you’ll read about in your free copy of Secret Europe: 7 Lesser-Known Places To Supercharge Your Retirement On The Continent, you’ll find…

  • Where you can tap into the national health care system for low to no cost, while still getting top-class treatment (a GP visit here is as little as $4.80)—pg. 17…

  • The country that’s often celebrated as offering the world’s best health care, where doctors still make home visits… and many hospitals serve their patients gourmet meals (including wine!) as standard—pg. 36…

  • The island haven that’s made a name for itself as a medical tourism destination. In its state-of-the-art clinics, you won’t have any problems finding English-speaking staff—pg. 30…

  • Where you can access specialist care for €8 to €12 ($8.50 to $12.70)… and emergency care costs as little as €20 ($21)—pg. 42…

Europe vs. North America—World’s Best Health Care Systems

Though Asian and Middle Eastern countries have taken the top spots in world health rankings in recent years, Europe continues to dominate the top 20. You’ll see this in the latest rankings from the Legatum Prosperity Index below (12 out of the top 20 nations are European). Meanwhile, Canada comes in at #32, while the United States is way down at #69.
Source: Legatum Prosperity Index™ 2023
Of course, this whole issue of health works both ways.

It’s reassuring to have top-notch medical facilities at your service… but you hope you won’t be calling them in too often…

And that’s another area where Europe shines.

Countless expats have told us over the years that they got healthier without any real effort...

Portion sizes at restaurants are filling but not oversized… which prevents you from over-indulging…
Readers who have made the move report healthier (and skinnier) lives—they
walk everywhere and eat better…
And all across the havens I’ll reveal to you in Secret Europe: 7 Lesser-Known Places To Supercharge Your Retirement On The Continent, there’s a focus on fresh, local produce…

Supermarket shelves aren’t stuffed with cans of processed foods.

In fact, locals tend not to load up on groceries in one place…

They’ll go to the fish market for the freshest catch… the baker for warm loaves… and so on…

The upside of all this is that while you’re out walking or biking about for your dinner ingredients, you’re also burning calories…

Alyson Sheldrake, who, along with her husband Dave, relocated from the UK to Portugal’s Algarve, says:

“We shop at the market each day for fresh produce and seafood and then prepare meals each evening together. We take long walks on the cliffs and along the beaches. We’re outside all the time, enjoying the sunshine.

“We didn’t make this move with the specific idea that we wanted to live healthier, but that has been one of the biggest benefits of our new lifestyle here in the Algarve. It’s hard not to eat healthy or to get exercise naturally each day. It’s just how you live.”

Won’t I Be Taxed To Death If I Live In Europe? Absolument Pas!

It’s true that Americans abroad have to file a tax return to the IRS every year…

Even if it’s just to tell them you don’t owe them any money.

When you actually do the math, though, you’ll probably find that your tax bill is unlikely to change when you leave home.

That’s partly because the majority of the havens I’ll be sharing with you have tax treaties with many countries, including the United States and Canada.

So you’re not going to be taxed twice on the same income.

Plus, here in Europe, you never have to worry about state taxes.

You will, of course, encounter some new taxes, as well as some familiar ones that likely cost more than back home. I’ll give you the lowdown on these as we explore a place in-depth…

Bottom line, don’t let the fear of taxes keep you away from your dream adventure. You shouldn’t be any more out of pocket.

Find Your Own Second Home In Europe For Less Than $100,000…

Hidden Haven: On our favorite Greek island, you could buy an apartment for around $93,000…

Like anywhere in the world, your biggest expense in moving to Europe will be housing.

But, buying or renting, prices can be far more affordable than comparable places in the United States… especially when you focus on the right markets…

In the places I’ll tell you about in Secret Europe: 7 Lesser-Known Places To Supercharge Your Retirement On The Continent, you’ll find cozy apartments to rent for as little as $500 a month (and that’s right in the city center)…

You can even buy your own place for under $100,000—with a sea view thrown into the bargain…

Plus, with dreamy chateaux and old stone homes, Europe offers up the kind of truly special lifestyle properties you just don’t find in the U.S…

And if the price of beachfront in California or Florida makes your eyes water, there’s more good news…

I know corners of Europe where you can still buy ocean-view apartments for less than $150,000… and even $100,000 if you’re up for some refurbing…

Here’s just a taste of some of the great deals I’ve spotted in our secret havens… the places I’ll be telling you about in Secret Europe: 7 Lesser-Known Places To Supercharge Your Retirement On The Continent

  • A two-bed apartment on a Greek island, away from the tourist path. It’s 80 square meters (861 ft2) with a balcony and view of the park. Price: €87,000 ($92,830).

  • Also on the island, a 114-square-meter (1,227 ft2) home split over three floors. With three bedrooms, it’s on a hillside with stunning views of the water. Price: €250,000 ($266,745).

  • A village home just five minutes from Italy’s Adriatic coast. Covering 150 square meters (1,615 ft2) over three floors (one of which is ideal for conversion to a separate rental space). It’s in perfect condition and full of character. Price: €80,000 ($85,360).

  • Also in Italy, a 220-square-meter (2,368 ft2) apartment in a historic palace. With frescoed ceilings, the apartment has three bedrooms, two baths, and a large ballroom. Price: €170,000 ($182,280).

  • In “Europe’s Secret Riviera,” a one-bed apartment with a panoramic view of the Adriatic from its terrace. Just seven minutes’ walk to the beach, it’s 55 square meters (592 ft2) and comes fully furnished. Price: €185,000 ($198,340).

  • In the historic Portuguese city most North Americans have never heard of (it’s just 45 minutes from Porto), there’s a three-bed apartment of 118 square meters (1,270 ft2). It’s close to shopping, entertainment, and public transport. Price: €175,000 ($187,620).

How Does Your Ideal Day Start?

What do you want to see when you look out your window?

That’s the question Founding Publisher Kathleen Peddicord advises readers—who are just starting out on their journey—to keep at the forefront of their mind.

And it’s a great starting point…

Here from the balcony of my apartment in Paris’ 7th arrondissement, I feel lucky to have an up-close view of Les Invalides (where you’ll find Napolean’s tomb)…

It’s especially pretty when the dome lights up at night.

But that’s just my version of paradise…

Maybe you long to wake to the gentle lapping of waves… and pull back your curtains to a sparkling, blue sea…

Or to birdsong… and flowers blooming against a backdrop of mountains and valleys…

Whatever lifestyle you embrace—the bustle of the city… the tranquility of village life… or something in between—it’s my mission to help you find it…

And, all the while, I’ll make sure to point you in the direction of those under-the-radar spots where you’ll have a far more authentic experience… at a lower cost…

“Sophisticated And Thoughtful…And Therefore More Useful”

“I have to say that you seem to dig deeper into the feel of a particular place and to do comparative analysis between alternative places. Your approach is more sophisticated and thoughtful and therefore more useful than that of other e-letters I’ve read covering these same subjects.”

‐‐John W., United States

I’m Thrilled…

It’s tempting to continue living the way you’ve been living. It’s easy… and it can be very frightening to think about creating a whole new life for yourself in a foreign place. All I can tell you now is that I’m thrilled… it has been one of the most satisfying experiences of my life.
