For many North Americans, the idea of living in Paris calls up images of sunset strolls along the Seine river… fresh baguettes from the corner boulangerie… and picnics over immaculate green lawns in one of the city’s famous parks.
Now think about the costs of all three of those experiences…

You could rent a chic apartment in Saint-Germain-des-Prés for $4,000 a month… or you could live like most locals do, in a smaller apartment in a lesser-known arrondissement for half that.
As a North American, we figure you’ll likely spend between $2,500 and $7,000 a month for comfortable living in Paris.

Health care costs are perhaps the biggest variable cost from person to person, but as you’ll soon learn, with doctor’s visits costing less than $30 and medication bills under $10, you probably won’t have to budget for health care.
If you’re an American, taxes are unlikely to change much, thanks to a treaty between the United States and France (more on that later, too).
Bottom line, like anywhere in the world, your cost of living is controllable and depends on your wants, needs, and priorities.

But believe me when I tell you it’s nothing to do with you.

I can also tell you that the French genuinely appreciate those of us who live here. Some see it as flattery to come from so far away… others view it as good judgement and therefore good character… while, frankly, most simply don’t care where you’re from.
The single best way I’ve learned for being warmly welcomed in France is to be courteous… and to speak French (or at least try).

Friendly and “always smiling”… there was a time when smiling at strangers in France would cause them to think you might be drunk—and, to be fair, it’s still the case in some places.
Generous and helpful… I can’t stress this enough: many hotel and restaurant staff love Americans (a direct effect from our habit to tip). Americans are also seen as willing to help strangers, which brings me to my next point.
Outgoing and talkative… as with everywhere, this is a double-edged sword. Not everyone is happy to chat. Still, bartenders, hair stylists, and others tend to jump a chance to practice their English and learn more about America.
Organized and respectful… Americans are rule-followers by and large. We’re not going to litter, for example, and we’re not going to try to skip ahead to the front of line (both of which are popular behaviors of expats from other parts of the world).
Of course, here’s what the French tell me they don’t like about Americans…

Not trying to speak the language… with English firmly entrenched as the lingua franca in Europe, it can be tempting to put off French classes. But you’re going to want to learn at least the basics to show you’re trying. Know how to say “Hello,” “Please,” “Thank you,” and “Do you speak English?” in French.

Expats here usually add a naughty word before it…
And it can steal hours from your day and the smile off your face…
I’m talking about bureaucracy. In France, paperwork is a way of life.
From applying for a visa to registering for healthcare, every step involves forms—often multiple copies—proof of identity, proof of address, and official translations.
You’ll need a good printer, good organization, and patience. Lots of patience.
One American expat in Lyon shared her experience opening a simple bank account. It took nearly two months:
“They needed three different proofs of address, but a utility bill didn’t count because it wasn’t in my name yet—and I couldn’t get the utility account in my name without a bank account. It was a full circle of madness.”
Rules vary by region, by office, and sometimes by the mood of the person behind the desk. It’s not personal—it’s just the French way.
The silver lining? Once you're through the red tape, life becomes infinitely easier. But getting there requires persistence, flexibility, and perhaps a bottle of wine waiting at the finish line.
I have something planned for you (more on that below), but here’s a sneak peek at a few insider tricks:
- Become a paperwork queen (or king). Make multiple copies of everything: your passport, visa, birth certificate, lease agreement, utility bills, bank statements—everything. Keep both digital and printed versions, and bring them to every appointment, even if they weren’t requested.
- Get organized. Create a dedicated folder (or two) for French paperwork. Label everything clearly. Bureaucrats love order, and presenting your documents neatly can go a long way.
- Bring a translator. Usually at least one person at a government office will speak English, but if French isn’t your strength, bring a friend who speaks it.
- Or hire a lawyer. They can handle it all for you. You can also go cheaper with a specialized professional called a concierge administrative (yes, people have made careers helping others with French bureaucracy). Be warned though: even when hiring someone, you’ll still need to be organized enough to provide copies of every document.

Getting used to life in Paris is easy… living elsewhere in the country, however, will require some adaption…
Most people think of Paris when France is brought up…
But it doesn’t quite represent the rest of the country.
Don’t get me wrong—Paris is magical… it’s the pride of France…
However, the City of Light has grown into a global city hosting unequalled masses of tourists and expats.
After all, when a city of a couple million people welcomes up to 40 million tourists each year, it’s hard not to adapt…
Many stores are open on Sundays… businesspeople hurry about with coffee on the go… and the parks are full of joggers—squint and you might think you’re in New York City.
That is to say, Paris doesn’t exactly represent the culture you’ll encounter in the rest of the country…
Let’s take a look at the downsides and the upsides of life outside Paris:
Beast: With the exception of grocery stores, many places are closed between noon and 2:00 p.m.—yes, a two-hour lunch break. Don't try to make any big buying decisions around that time. Lunch is sacrosanct.
Beauty: Between noon and 2:00 p.m. is a great time to do your grocery shopping. Or do as the French: Stop and eat!
Beast: Don't do your grocery shopping on Friday mornings, unless you want to practice your French with local retirees. They really do park their carts in the aisles, blocking the flow of other shoppers while chatting.
Beauty: Depending on the town, Friday or Saturday market shopping is a lot of fun... if you're not in a hurry. It's when the local farmers come into town to sell their farm-produced cheeses. It's when the fishmonger shouts out the day's best catch and buy. It's when the bakery counter has lots of samples and great deals. And, if you’re in the Basque region, it's when the local cherry growers dress up in their jaunty berets and give out handfuls of sweet cherries.

Beast: Smoking. Despite the fact that smoking is banned in airports, railway stations, hospitals, schools, shops, offices, restaurants, and bars, it is still common to see people puffing everywhere.
Beauty: There isn't one...unless you're a smoker, in which case, welcome to the land of chic smokers.
Beast: French drivers. They use their signals oddly, they often beep after something has happened so no one knows who the beep is meant for, and they cut back into line on the freeway, after passing, as if there were a chase on.
Beauty: Compared with other European drivers, who seem to do everything but concentrate on driving, French drivers are on the ball and considerate. They let you out if you are waiting to enter traffic, and, as with everything else in life, they are generally courteous (Parisians excluded!).

- In France, your utility bills can plummet. Energy costs more here than the USA, but you’re also living in a (much) smaller dwelling. And in Panama, Kathleen also ran the A/C nearly 100% of the time thanks to year-round sun and warm weather.
