TRAVEL

From the U.S. or Canada, you’ll land at Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport (OPO).
Several airlines have direct flights to Porto, including: United via Newark; TAP Portugal via Boston, Newark, San Francisco, Miami, Chicago; and Air Transat via Toronto. These and many other airlines provide connecting services.

We routinely find that www.kayak.com provides the best airfare results. You can also try the following websites: www.orbitz.comwww.travelocity.comwww.google.com/flights, and www.expedia.com.

You also may want to sign up for free email alerts from your preferred airlines. Take a look at their websites for options. Many websites also offer free email alerts highlighting air travel specials, such as www.travelzoo.com.

Also note that the best way to get the best deal on a flight is to be flexible with your travel dates and airports, if possible.

Once you have arrived, you’ll have many options for transport to the hotel:

  1. Taxi:
    • A taxi ride from the airport to the city center costs between €20 and €30.
    • The journey takes approximately 20-30 minutes, depending on traffic.

  2. Metro:
    • The Metro Line E (Purple Line) connects the airport to the city center.
    • The cost is approximately €2.00, including the Andante card (rechargeable ticket).
    • The journey takes about 30 minutes.

  3. Bus:
    • STCP (Porto's public transport company) operates several bus lines from the airport to the city.
    • The cost is around €2.00.
    • Travel time depends on traffic but is typically around 30-40 minutes.

  4. Ridesharing (Uber/Bolt):
    • Ridesharing services like Uber or Bolt cost between €15 and €25.
    • Travel time is similar to that of a taxi, around 20-30 minutes.

  5. Airport Shuttle:
    • Several shuttle services offer transport from the airport to various points in the city.
    • Costs range from €7 to €12 per person.
    • Travel time is approximately 30-40 minutes, depending on the number of stops.

These prices are approximate and can vary based on time of day, traffic conditions, and specific service providers.

CURRENCY EXCHANGE

You’ll need euros
it’s best to exchange your dollars before you leave the airport. To avoid poor exchange rates at banks and hotels, you can withdraw euros at ATMs.

CREDIT CARDS

Most restaurants, shops, and hotels in Porto will accept credit cards. Look for a sign near the entrance noting which cards are accepted. Visa and Mastercard are most commonly used, though some businesses will accept American Express and Diners credit cards.

Be sure to verify which of your cards offer “no foreign transaction fees.” Using such a card with cashback rewards will more or less nullify any extra costs associated with exchange rates favorable to the provider.

SEEING MORE OF PORTUGAL

You’ll have an easy time keeping yourself busy in Porto, but why not see what else the region has to offer?

Porto’s river, the Douro, runs from the city through the country and into Spain. The Douro River Valley is arguably the most breathtaking wine region in the world. The river itself, whose name translates as the "river of gold," is said to shimmer in the setting sun like liquid bullion.

The region offers vineyard wine tastings and tours covering everything from Paleolithic archaeological sites to city landmarks.

If you’re looking to travel farther from the Porto, Lisbon is about a 3 hour drive south, while the famous Algarve region takes about 5 hours.

The Algarve, in particular, is a key destination for many as a place to relax. It’s a golfer’s paradise with over 42 9-hole or 18-hole courses. Whether you’re an amateur or an experienced golfer, you can enjoy the splendid coastal views of the Algarve while teeing off on award-winning courses.

If you’d like to stay for a while and see the country by car, all you’ll need is a valid driver’s license from your home country and you should have an International Driver’s License, available from AAA or in Canada, CAA. There’s no better way to explore Portugal.
