Traveling to Spain

Traveling to Spain is an experience that all travelers should do at least once in their lifetime.

Here you’ll find a culture unlike any other. From its passionate flamenco dancing to its famous tapas, the soul of Spain is truly unique. You’ll find plenty of tasty foods to try in Spain, including paella and dozens of different tapas. And don’t forget about the variety of wines and sangrias available!

The architecture in Spain is world famous for its beauty. From the amazing Gaudí cathedral (still under construction!) in Barcelona to castles from the Middle Ages in Aragon, you’ll find plenty of unique structures to explore.

Likewise, the landscapes in Spain are some of the most diverse and stunning in the world. In Valencia, you’ll be able to take a dip in brilliant-blue Mediterranean Sea, while the Almeria desert and Pyrenees Mountains are a train ride away.

No matter where you go in Spain, you’ll find a warm and inviting atmosphere. The people of Spain are known for their hospitality, and you’ll always find a friendly face when exploring the country.

Several airlines have direct flights to Spain; Air FranceUnited via Newark, TAP Portugal via Miami, British Airways via Baltimore, and American Airlines via Philadelphia, among others. Several other airlines provide connecting services.

We routinely find that www.kayak.com provides the best airfare results. You can also try the following websites: www.onetravel.com www.orbitz.comwww.travelocity.comwww.google.com/flights, and www.expedia.com.

You also may want to sign up for free email alerts from your preferred airlines. Take a look at their websites for options. Many websites also offer free email alerts highlighting air travel specials. Try www.travelzoo.com.

Also note that the best way to get the best deal on a flight is to be flexible with your travel dates and airports, if possible.

Currency exchange

The currency in Spain is euro. There’s no limit to the amount of cash you can bring with you to Spain. However, you’ll need to make a declaration at customs if you’re traveling with more than €10,000 cash, including traveler’s checks. Your bank will sell you euros at a competitive rate, though you’ll pay a commission fee.

Credit cards

Visa and Mastercard have wide acceptance at shops and ATMs throughout Spain, though some businesses will accept American Express and Diners credit cards.

But look for cards that waive the currency conversion fee when you spend.

Credit cards that waive international fees, like the Capital One VentureOne Rewards Credit Card, are your best bet for dodging some extra expenses to your wallet.

Driving in Spain

In most cases, a North American driver’s license and passport are more than enough to drive a car in Spain (with the minimum driver’s age of 18).

But having an International Driving Permit (IDP) will benefit you as a translated version of your driver’s license.

However, it will not be valid by itself and must be carried with your driver’s license.

Getting an International Driving Permit (IDP) is relatively easy. You can do so via the American Automobile Association (AAA) website or your local AAA branch. Also, you do not need to be an AAA member to apply for an IDP; you will have to pay $20, however.

If you stay in the country for less than 90 days, you can drive for the whole period.

We’ve worked with an international insurance service to provide exclusive coverage for Live and Invest Overseas event attendees.
