With Living In Portugal—Your Guide To The Good Life In The Old World in your hands, you’ll step beyond the usual tourist traps and experience the country like a local.

Your time is precious, and I’m not here to waste it…

So, I’ll only tell you about the places and experiences that I’ve personally tried — or those that come recommended by our trusted Live And Invest Overseas correspondents on the ground…

Since my first visit a decade ago, I visit Portugal at least once a year. When I’m here, I love to catch some rays on the stunning beaches of the Algarve…

But, as a city girl at heart, I’m also drawn to the cultural charms of Lisbon and Porto.

Whatever pace you’re after, the options in this country are endless.

With Living In Portugal—Your Guide To The Good Life In The Old World in your hands, you’ll get plenty of inspiration for your own adventure here.

I’ll tell you where to find:

  • The best beach for spotting a celebrity or two… and where to go for a secluded swim…

  • The alternative Camino where many pilgrims start their journey to Santiago (I’ll tell you the best time of year to go)…

  • The best (and quirkiest) festivals to make your stay even more memorable — for one event, you’ll need to pack a white outfit to fit in with the crowd…

  • The best place to tee off — just don’t get distracted by the amazing view on the 16th hole…

  • The ultimate spot to shop, dine, and catch a live performance — from theater to DJ sets — all under one roof…

  • One of Europe’s oldest and most prestigious universities — don’t miss a visit to the library (where books share space with a colony of bats!)…

  • Mountain trails that will take you past pristine rivers and waterfalls — watch out for the rare Garrano horse…

  • Our favorite place to combine a leisurely cycle with the opportunity to taste award-winning local wine…

  • The best place to hang out with your dog (or go to spot other cute pups!) — this space has all you need for hours of fun…

  • And much more…
Looking for your perfect beach? My list of the best starts on page 99
But there’s more to this book than filling your schedule with places to go.

A huge part of settling into a new place — anywhere in the world — is making connections.

And I’ve got you covered there, too.

How To Fit Right Into Your New Community — Fast…

Looking for the best cafes, best food, and best drinks?
Our foodie secrets start on page 5!
Armed with my insider list of the best places to go, you’ll soon narrow down your own favorite spots… and find yourself going back for more.

For most of us, this tends to happen around food…

Whether you’re ordering a bifana (roast pork sandwich) from a food truck… grabbing an outdoor table for your daily espresso… or shopping at the farmer’s market for fresh produce to take home… you’ll get talking to people.

Once you show up a few times, owners and regulars will remember you… and they’ll pass on their insider knowledge.

To get you started, I’ll share some of our favorite spots to grab a coffee, a sandwich, or a three-course meal.

In your free copy of Living In Portugal—Your Guide To The Good Life In The Old World, you’ll discover:

  • The charming café inside a former church — time your visit right, and you’ll catch a free Fado show…

  • One of Lisbon’s oldest and best-loved coffee and pastry shops  — inspired by the Palace of Versailles, you may forget which city you’re in…

  • Where to experience seafood like never before — from samosas to curry to salad, octopus is the star of the show…

  • Where to grab a hearty menu do dia (daily menu) — with main course, drink, and espresso for just under €10…

  • The best piri piri chicken in the whole of the Algarve (spoiler: this isn’t in a restaurant but from a market stall by the water)…

  • The open-air market that dates to the 12th century — don’t miss the ladies baking pão com chouriço (chorizo bread) on the spot...

  • The secret to getting a table at some of the most popular seaside restaurants (you can’t reserve in advance, but I’ll tell you how to get in!)…

  • The “roasted pig mecca of the country” — our favorite restaurant here serves up to 100 suckling pigs a day…

  • Where to get your cheesecake fix in the Algarve (don’t miss the star-shaped version of this favorite dessert)…

  • And many more fantastic ways to satisfy your hunger…

Sampling these local specialties — along with a glass of sparkling vinho verde, port wine, or a sour cherry liqueur (served in a chocolate cup) — is one of the best ways to experience the local culture.

This Is The Life —
 “Inexpensive, Uncomplicated,
Sweet, And Traditional”

“I start most days here with café (mini but potent espresso) and pasteis de nata tart—a creamy, vanilla custard pastry topped with icing sugar or cinnamon.

“The combination is a national treasure that costs just 1 euro and symbolizes life here: inexpensive, uncomplicated, sweet, and traditional.”
—Marie Moore, Expat in the eastern Algarve
With great weather year-round — especially in the Algarve region — it’s easy to get hooked on this laid-back lifestyle… sharing meals with new friends as you watch the world go by.

You may never want to leave.

If Portugal is (or becomes) part of your long-term plan, then I have lots more insider tips to help you prepare for that, too.

Could One Of These Little-Known Havens Be Your New Home?

Have you ever heard of the “Hawaii of Europe”? Insights on Portugal’s islands starts on page 73
It’s no secret that, at Live And Invest Overseas, Portugal is one of our favorite spots.

Not only in Europe… but on the planet.

For seven years running, Portugal took first place in our Overseas Retirement Index. (Considering all the amazing options out there, that is no easy feat.)

We’ve been singing the praises of this outstanding haven for over a decade… but now others are starting to pay attention, too...

Word is spreading quickly about this safe and affordable country — with great weather, quality health care, and easy residency thrown into the bargain.

In late 2024, Google reported a surge in users searching “moving to Portugal.”

And when one survey of over 110,000 Americans where they would most like to move, Portugal came out on top.

Now, it may seem as if you’re dealing with a small country…

After all, Portugal is only around the size of the state of Maine.

But despite its small stature, you have a wide range of lifestyles and landscapes to choose from.

Lucky for you, we’ve been exploring this country for the past 15 years — so we have the inside track.

We know exactly where to go to get the best value (and the overgrown, overpriced places you should avoid).

In Living In Portugal—Your Guide To The Good Life In The Old World, I’ll reveal the top places you should focus on — from cosmopolitan cities to golden beaches to hilltop escapes.

Of course, you’re not going to decide your new home from your armchair…

With this intel at your disposal, though, you can narrow your options… and then get out there and explore your shortlist on foot!

In your free copy of my new book, you’ll read about:

  • One of the world’s best islands (as voted many times over) — think Europe but in the tropics...

  • The “Tuscany of Portugal” — it’s blessed with rolling hills, picture-perfect villages, and orange and lemon orchards…

  • The city with one of Europe’s oldest universities — it’s bursting with culture yet cheaper than Lisbon and Porto...

  • The place we call “the real Algarve” — it’s in the heart of the countryside but just 20 minutes from the ocean…

  • A pedestrian paradise where you’ll never run out of boutiques, restaurants, cafés, churches, parks, and theaters…

  • The prettiest village in the Algarve — the main square is a perfect spot to sip a coffee and watch the world go by...

  • The city where Old-World charm blends seamlessly with dazzling urban spaces — its 200-acre park offers a peaceful escape…

  • The ultimate hideaway — this pretty mountain hamlet has just a handful of whitewashed houses, a café, shop, and restaurant…

  • The river valley that’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site — dotted with vineyards, the country’s famous port wine comes from here…

  • The best alternative to the Algarve — whether you’re looking for pristine beaches, historic castles, nature reserves, or ancient villages, this “secret coast” has it all...

These are just some of the many havens I’ll share with you in the pages of Living In Portugal—Your Guide To The Good Life In The Old World.

“We Found Everything
We Were Looking For”…

“Portugal’s Algarve region looked interesting, but we wanted to be near Lisbon. With help from Live And Invest Overseas, we found the place that seemed to have everything we were looking for...

“It is spectacularly beautiful with clean ocean waters, a rugged coastline, white sandy beaches, stone buildings, cobblestone sidewalks, and several parks.

“When the sun or moon rises over the bay, you can feel the romance in the air. My wife and I feel like we’re falling in love all over again. Our favorite pastime is strolling along the bay holding hands...”
—Terry O’Halloran, Expat near Lisbon

Whether you’re planning to stay here part or full time, you’ll have many questions...

And honestly, hundreds of questions that likely haven’t even entered your head yet…
Trust me, I’ve experienced it— four times!

Allow me to introduce myself properly…

I’m Kat Kalashian, head of Live And Invest Overseas’ Europe Division… and, more importantly, a serial expat.

I’ve been on the move around the world almost all my life.

But here’s the short version…
When I was 8 years old, my family moved from Baltimore, Maryland, to Waterford, Ireland, where we bought and renovated a Georgian country home.

Then, in my teens, we moved to Paris, France, where I finished high school. (This was when I discovered that Europe was my true home.)

After graduating college in New York, I relocated to Panama, where I lived for seven years — all the time yearning for my return to the Continent.

Finally, in 2018, I returned to Paris — this time, with my husband in tow. Today, we still live in the City of Light with our two French-born daughters.

I’m familiar with the trials and tribulations of an overseas move and the adjustments you have to make in every new destination.

That first move to Ireland was a baptism of fire for my family…

But it was also an unforgettable experience that only sparked our desire to see even more of the world.

Now, my goal with Living In Portugal—Your Guide To The Good Life In The Old World is to prepare you ahead of time so you can hit the ground running wherever you choose to spend time in this country…

From the big things (like renting or buying a home) to the day-to-day issues (like where to get a great haircut), my correspondents and I will share our hard-won tips with you.

In the pages of your free book, you’ll find out:

  • How to greet your local friends (and skip the awkward handshake vs. hug dilemma)…

  • How to decipher Portuguese real estate listings (get up to speed on urbanizations, quintas, and T2s)…

  • The best way to find a reliable cleaner (domestic help starts at just €7 an hour)…

  • The best service providers — get a phone, internet, and TV service bundle for around €55 a month…

  • What to expect when driving here — from how to get your license to paying motorway tolls…

  • Where you can live without a car… and how to save as much as 40% on public transport…

  • The must-have app to help you break through the language barrier in an instant (this one is way better than Google Translate)…

  • Your best options for flying (or sailing) with your pet — and how to “carpool” across the Pond with other pet owners …

  • The best expat groups (online and in person) — make quick connections and get tips from those who moved before you…

Thanks to these tips — and lots more — you’ll have fewer unknowns to worry about.

You’ll be free to spend more time enjoying the life you moved halfway across the world for in the first place

Explore Europe At Your Own Pace
(And At A Discount)

Europe is the perfect home if you have wanderlust
One of the biggest perks for North American expats in Europe is the chance to hop cities — even at the last minute…

Feeling too hot in the Algarve? Swap it for the windswept shores of the Emerald Isle…

Want to escape the crowds of Lisbon in high season? Take a long weekend in Ljubljana — Central Europe’s best-kept secret (and one of my favorite cities in the world)…

Just fancy a completely change of culture? Lose yourself among the magnificent mosques and spice markets of Istanbul…

You can get to all of these places and more in just a few hours.

Of course, it’s that bit easier to escape for a few days to London, Prague, or Rome when you’re an easy run from an airport.

Case in point… Jeff and Joch Woodruff moved from California to Portugal just before the pandemic.

That first year, they were grounded. But since then, they’ve taken full advantage of the fact that they live just 15 minutes from Porto’s international airport.

Over the past few years, they’ve traveled all around their newly adopted country… as well as taking budget flights to destinations in Spain, France, Italy, the UK, and Ireland.

“The best thing about going to all these great cities is that we don’t have to see everything on one trip,” Jeff told us. “We can walk around Naples or Barcelona at our leisure, knowing that we can easily come back any time.”

Retire Here On Your Social Security Check
(And Get Treated Like Royalty)

The cost of living in the Algarve is up to 60% cheaper than Miami
Portugal is sometimes dubbed “the Florida of Europe.”

But I’d argue that the lifestyle here is far superior to anything you’ll find in the Sunshine State.

For starters, the Algarve has more days of sunshine than Miami… yet your cost of living can be as much as 60% lower.

While there’s no official “retirement visa” in Portugal, most retirees qualify for the D7 visa.

For this, you only need to show a passive income of €1,200 a month.

With the average Social Security check around $2,000, it’s possible to qualify for the D7 on this income alone.

Apart from affordability, however, there’s another reason Portugal is one of the world’s best retirement havens…

By law, anyone aged 65 and over gets priority treatment.

This means they can skip to the top of the queue on public transportation and at hospitals, airports, supermarkets, banks, and more.

Frankly, I can’t think of anywhere else in the world that treats its seniors better.

If you’re in this demographic — or you’re relocating with an aging parent — you’ll find this is a place brimming with opportunities…

To give you an idea of just some of the perks of being an older member of the community, here are some of the things I’ll share with you in the pages of Living In Portugal—Your Guide To The Good Life In The Old World

  • How to access free courses (for students aged 50 and over) — you can even have your travel expenses covered!…

  • When to avail of the national health service (at little to no cost)…

  • How to get a significant discount on your health insurance policy…

  • Where to go for accessible beaches — with 47 of these (and counting), the whole family can enjoy a day by the ocean…

  • The city taxi service that will take you to your health care appointment for just €2 each way…

  • Where you can get discounts on everyday services (from train tickets to movie theaters to concerts)….

  • Places to have fun (and make friends) at little to no cost — from book clubs to chair yoga to cooking demos…

  • Where to find like-minded neighbors — from golf communities to senior residences, Portugal does retirement living in style…
